PROTECTING YOUR HOME FROM ICE DAMS
Its that time of year again for roof ice dam backups, damaged gutters and roof leaks.
WHAT IS AND ICE DAM?
Ice dams are formed when heat fromthe inside of a home escapes into the attic and warms
the roof decking during winter. This heat, combined with heat from the sun, can melt snow on
the roof. Melting snow on the upper roof and in the valleys then runs down toward the eaves
as water. When it reaches the cold eaves and gutters, it refreezes. The continual thaw and re-
freeze process creates ice dams. The result is water backing up under the roof shingles or
behind fascia boards where it can soal through the roof decking or wall sheathing, creating
roof leaks and black mold and causing damage to attics, ceilings and walls.
In an emergency situation, when ice and water is backing up into the house, it is best to hire a
professional such as ourselves to come out and remove snow and ice from your roof to stop
leaking. At that time we can also offer a permanent solution.

Ice Dam Defense
There are three ways to defend against the damage ice dams cause: insulation, ventilation
and water-proofing underlayment. All three work together. Insulation keeps heat from
escaping from your home’s living space into your attic. Ventilation removes the heat and
helps keep the roof deck evenly cool to help prevent snow from melting on the roof. Finally,
waterproofing shingle underlayment is laid across the roof before shingles area applied.
Here at C&C Roofing, we specialize in soffit and ridge vent systems. We always install
ice/water shield ( waterproof underlayment) when installing a new roof. We have the
solutions for your ice dam problems.
